From the Rector: August 2022

Dear Parish Family,

Jennifer and I were delighted to have our son Sam arrive here in Wilmington last week, giving us a very brief window of time to have all three of our children at home together. By the time you read this, our daughter EllaKathryn will have departed for her junior year of college. Just like that. I trust many of you are familiar with this experience.

One of the most special parts of this short time - for me - was having all five of us gather together at the dinner table. Not too many years ago this would have been a common, almost daily occurrence - easily taken for granted. I’ll admit I felt a bit sentimental about the gift of these recent evenings, knowing that in a short time the Craigs would soon become dispersed again for the foreseeable future.

Here in the height of our summer schedule, I’ve been happy to see similar scenes as we gather together on Sunday mornings. Grown children home - extended families together - truly a wonderful and traditional Wilmington and St. James Parish summer.

It’s wonderful and encouraging to see everyone at worship, and in such good numbers. At the same time, it’s not lost on me that our beloved downtown sanctuary and our Mount Lebanon Chapel are putting us at more than one table this season, and that members of our parish family aren’t seeing each other on a more regular basis.

There are lots of folks at work this summer intentionally making plans for our fall season. With the amazing help of many talented parishioners, our staff are individually and collectively imagining and organizing meaningful programming. We are most delighted to have Gray Hodsdon on board as our new Associate Rector and also Ansley Trask as the Director of our Day School. The clergy and vestry will be holding our annual retreat at Trinity Center on August 5-6, to prayerfully continue to the mission-minded business of our parish.

I wish you and your families a safe and fun month of August. Importantly, I am already excited to gather all of us together on Sunday, September 11th, once again around the same family table.

Blessings,

Phillip

Vestry - Class of 2024, Faith Formation Vestry Liaison

While I am not eager to do so, this is what I see when I look in the mirror.

I was 12 years old when my father died, leaving my mother alone to raise two daughters and two sons. have few memories of my father, but many of his closest friends have often told me how admired and respected he was. My mother was a strong-willed woman who was active in St. James. My grandparents, aunts and uncles were also very active in the Church, which meant the Church became an integral part of family life and our maturation.
In high school, I attended South Kent School, an Episcopal private school in rural Connecticut. The lessons there went beyond the classroom, where one learned the value of honesty, integrity and the strength of community. I next went to University of the South, again a school founded in Episcopal ideals. I became disenchanted with schooling and came back to Wilmington to go to work, all the time knowing I would return one day to finish. Unfortunately I never did.
The smartest thing I did after leaving school was to marry Anne. That decision led to two wonderful children and six amazing grandchildren. Early on in my journey with Anne I briefly considered a life in the Episcopal ministry but together we decided I was not truly called to the commitment. I did nevertheless remain active at St. James. I was a Sunday school teacher, a lay reader, diocesan convention chairman and Junior warden on the Vestry. My greatest memory of Vestry work was as a young member I found myself admonishing the much older leaders of St. James for failing to remember that "forgiveness" was the most basic tenet of Christianity. To this day I can only believe that God gave me the strength to speak so boldly. I truly believe that moment helped shape the future of St. James for many years and perhaps to this day.
That is what I see. Now, let me try to imagine what God might see.
He would see a man who knows right from wrong. He would see a man who loves his family but holds his emotions inside. He would see a man who has compassion for others, particularly for those less fortunate. He would see a man who wants to help others, particularly those who are trying to help themselves but need a little boost. He would see a humble man with good intentions but often lacks the strength to carry through. He would see a man who needs frequent renewal through the Grace of the Holy Eucharist. He would see a man who wants a stronger relationship with Christ.
Let us Bless the Lord who forgives our sins.

Shannon Lockamy

Christian Formation Assistant
910-763-1628 |

Shannon joined St. James in August of 2018, moving here from central NC. Shannon most recently worked for WCPSS, as a Dance Teacher in multiple settings, teaching crafting skills through 4-H, as well as homeschooling her daughter. Shannon received both her Associates Degrees from Peace College, Raleigh, NC and attended NC State University majoring in the Masters in Teaching program.

Shannon enjoys pottery, dancing, playing the bagpipes, working on puzzles and working educating children. Children are truly the lifeforce of our future. Jesus asked for the children to be brought to Him. Patience, practice and perseverance are all important to building a strong foundation in a child's life. Let us empower our children to be strong Christians and feed them as Jesus fed the masses.

It is a privilege to work with the children of St. James Parish and the families of St. James. The love of Christ abounds within these walls.
