From the Rector: August 2022

Dear Parish Family,
Jennifer and I were delighted to have our son Sam arrive here in Wilmington last week, giving us a very brief window of time to have all three of our children at home together. By the time you read this, our daughter EllaKathryn will have departed for her junior year of college. Just like that. I trust many of you are familiar with this experience.
One of the most special parts of this short time - for me - was having all five of us gather together at the dinner table. Not too many years ago this would have been a common, almost daily occurrence - easily taken for granted. I’ll admit I felt a bit sentimental about the gift of these recent evenings, knowing that in a short time the Craigs would soon become dispersed again for the foreseeable future.
Here in the height of our summer schedule, I’ve been happy to see similar scenes as we gather together on Sunday mornings. Grown children home - extended families together - truly a wonderful and traditional Wilmington and St. James Parish summer.
It’s wonderful and encouraging to see everyone at worship, and in such good numbers. At the same time, it’s not lost on me that our beloved downtown sanctuary and our Mount Lebanon Chapel are putting us at more than one table this season, and that members of our parish family aren’t seeing each other on a more regular basis.
There are lots of folks at work this summer intentionally making plans for our fall season. With the amazing help of many talented parishioners, our staff are individually and collectively imagining and organizing meaningful programming. We are most delighted to have Gray Hodsdon on board as our new Associate Rector and also Ansley Trask as the Director of our Day School. The clergy and vestry will be holding our annual retreat at Trinity Center on August 5-6, to prayerfully continue to the mission-minded business of our parish.
I wish you and your families a safe and fun month of August. Importantly, I am already excited to gather all of us together on Sunday, September 11th, once again around the same family table.
Blessings,
Phillip
