Guardian Angel Prayer Experience 2021
This past year has certainly been quite different than I ever could have imagined! I never dreamed that Covid would have altered so many of our activities, worship opportunities, and experiences within our St James Youth Ministries. Many things have been “put on hold” for a safer time. We have had to change the rhythm of our Youth Ministries Program yet our young people have continued to be invested in their spiritual growth and service within the Church.
One experience that our young people love is our St. James Guardian Angel Prayer Experience. I am asking for your help during this Lenten Season. Our young people are growing up in a changing and unstable world and they are trying to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Some of them are confused, insecure, and/or lonely. All of them need all of the love, support, and encouragement they can get!
As we read the Bible, we are aware that angels do many things….they protect, help, feed, fight evil, comfort, sing, guide, and celebrate. I know that we can’t fit the job description entirely but we can be a friend to our young people by praying for them and by encouraging them. This is a huge commitment. As you pray for a young person, the relationship between the two of you will grow stronger and deeper. All of our young people in our St. James Youth Community need to know that someone other than their parents and their youth advisors cares about them!
If you agree to be a “Guardian Angel” during Lent, you will receive information about the young person who will be assigned to you. You may decide to gather more information by talking to his/her parents. Please remember to keep your identity as their “angel” a secret and to pray for him/her each day. While prayer is the primary focus of this program, please keep in mind that tangible expressions of your support, encouragement, and love (cards and/or notes) are needed to show your young person that you truly exist. Please write to your young person during the first week to let him/her know that you are there.
This prayer experience will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 17 and it will conclude on Sunday, March 28. (I will remind you on March 21 to send a note revealing who you are and your thoughts about this Guardian Angel Experience.) Although your identity will not be known throughout this program, please be assured that each young person will have the comfort and joy of knowing that someone in this parish is truly their earthly “Guardian Angel.”
Please let me know by FEBRUARY 3 if you will be willing to be a “Guardian Angel” to one of our young people. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

To Our Young Friends!
Please ask your parents to support and encourage you in your commitment to this Guardian Angel Prayer Experience... Your Guardian Angel will be investing in your life through daily prayers and notes/letters of encouragement. At the closure of our Guardian Angel Experience on Palm Sunday, March 29 YOU WILL BE ASKED TO WRITE A THANK YOU LETTER TO YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL. Please mark this date on your calendar. (Yes, I will remind you and Yes, I will send you the name & address of your Guardian Angel as our St James 2021 Guardian Angel Prayer Experience comes to an end.) There are many Guardian Angels who attend St James who have developed a unique and special relationship with “their young person!”
