Spiritual Growth Moment ~ June 20, 2021 ~ God is in control
by Gail Smith
This last year was a tough one for everyone. There was the pandemic, coupled with the usual challenges that befall us, adding up to an unusually stressful time we will not soon forget. Sometimes it felt like the world was spinning out of control, but that was never the case. We may have been surprised and jolted by what was going on, but God was not. He never is.
My Bible study group covered the book of Genesis this year. As we learned about Noah, I began to relate to his situation in a more personal way I had not previously. I could almost imagine what it was like for Noah to have been shut inside the ark, having no idea what brave new world would await him and his family when the flood waters receded. When they left the ark, their first move was to build an altar and make a sacrifice to God. Noah had trusted God and God had done exactly as He promised. Noah and his family were safe.
As for us, we still aren’t sure what’s ahead – will things really be normal again? It appears we are finally returning to a pre-pandemic lifestyle. What’s my point? It’s not the first time people have felt overwhelmed by a crisis, and it won’t be the last. But here’s the good news. Paul David Tripp in ‘New Morning Mercies’ puts it this way: “Because God is my Sovereign, my life is never out of control, and because He is my Savior, He blesses me with everything I need to live in the middle of things that are beyond my control.”
God is faithful. He keeps His promises. We can rest assured. No matter how unsettling our circumstances may seem, no matter what the future holds, God is in control. Thanks be to God.
